NSHSS Foundation STEM scholarships are created to help reduce financial barriers for high school seniors interested in entering college to pursue STEM majors—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The scholarships are for entering college freshmen who belong to the following underrepresented groups in STEM careers: African American, Hispanic, Native American, and females. The scholarships are to be used for the student’s first year of college.

Eligibility: Applications must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents who are high school seniors who are among the targeted groups in the paragraph above with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent. In addition to the application, requirements include teacher recommendation, transcript, personal statement, and photograph.

Students must indicate interested in one of the following majors or disciplines and show evidence of interest through academic courses taken or participation in programs indicating such interest. The Foundation awards scholarships to applicants who are pursuing a degree in, or closely related to, one of the following STEM disciplines:

  • Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
  • Biosciences/Pre-med
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Civil Engineering
  • Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
  • Computer and Computational Sciences, including Statistics and Accounting
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geosciences
  • Information Sciences
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Oceanography
  • Operations Research
  • Physics
  • Teaching in STEM areas

Scholarships funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, and on campus room and board, or other related expenses. Scholarship checks will be sent to the university where the recipient enrolls to deposit in the student’s university account. Scholarship checks can be split over the fall and spring semester or the entire amount used for the fall, whichever the recipient stipulates.
